Nikolas Khamenia was not someone Jon Scheyer hoped to lose this offseason. The former five-star recruit flashed potential during his freshman year and played a meaningful role in Duke Blue Devils men’s basketball rotation. Even with a clear opportunity for minutes next season, the Los Angeles native still opted to enter the transfer portal.
However, a return to Durham may not be completely off the table.
On a recent episode of Locked On Blue Devils, host JJ Jackson and guest Kevin Connelly discussed the possibility of Khamenia coming back for his sophomore campaign. Jackson noted that more insiders are suggesting the door isn’t fully closed, while Connelly agreed adding that while a return would be surprising, it wouldn’t be shocking.
Khamenia’s decision could ultimately depend on several moving pieces within Duke’s roster. His entry into the portal appears to be about keeping his options open. If Isaiah Evans and Dame Sarr both return instead of declaring for the NBA Draft, it’s difficult to imagine Khamenia wanting to come back to a similar role.
On the other hand, if one of them departs or especially if both do there’s a stronger chance Duke could push hard to bring him back into the fold.
The situation is also tied to Duke’s activity in the transfer portal. The Blue Devils have been relatively quiet so far, aside from reported interest in Flory Bidunga, who ultimately committed to Louisville Cardinals men’s basketball, and John Blackwell.

Blackwell, who averaged 19 points per game for the Wisconsin Badgers men’s basketball last season, remains a top target. However, he is expected to take his time, with plans to decide around early May shortly before the NBA Combine. That timeline means Scheyer would need significant confidence in landing him if Duke chooses to wait.
As Connelly suggested, while a return for Khamenia isn’t the most likely outcome, it’s still within the realm of possibility. With strong interest from programs nationwide, he’ll have no shortage of options as he weighs his next move.
