Recruiting battles don’t always end in a program’s favor, and the South Carolina Gamecocks experienced that reality once again with the loss of a major defensive target. Four-star linebacker Ja’Bois Smith, one of the top prospects in Georgia, announced his commitment to the Florida Gators.
Smith is regarded as the No. 12 linebacker in the nation and one of Georgia’s highest-ranked recruits. South Carolina was among his final contenders, along with Georgia Bulldogs, Texas Longhorns, and Texas A&M Aggies.
The talented defender visited Florida on May 28 and wasted little time making his decision, pledging to the Gators shortly afterward. Smith still has an official visit scheduled with South Carolina in June, though it remains uncertain whether he will follow through with those plans now that he has committed. If he does visit Columbia, the Gamecocks could have an opportunity to continue recruiting him and potentially change his mind.

For head coach Shane Beamer and his staff, Smith’s commitment elsewhere leaves a notable gap in the 2027 recruiting class, which currently does not include a linebacker commitment.
In addition to excelling at linebacker, Smith is known for his versatility, contributing on both sides of the ball and competing in track and field. His athleticism and overall skill set made him one of South Carolina’s top priorities in the class.
Although missing out on Smith is a setback, the Gamecocks still have a solid foundation in their 2027 recruiting class. South Carolina currently holds nine verbal commitments and sits No. 31 nationally in the recruiting rankings as the coaching staff continues searching for defensive talent to strengthen the class.
