The trade speculation surrounding Tarik Skubal continues to intensify as the Detroit Tigers struggle through a disappointing season. With Detroit sitting near the bottom of the standings and Skubal approaching free agency, many around baseball believe a trade before the deadline is becoming increasingly likely.

Skubal, a two-time Cy Young Award winner, is in the final year of his contract and reportedly remains far apart from the Tigers in extension negotiations. Although he recently underwent surgery to remove bone fragments from his left elbow, he was highly effective before the procedure, posting a 2.70 ERA with 45 strikeouts in just over 43 innings. His combination of elite production and ace-level potential makes him one of the most attractive trade targets in baseball.
One proposed deal would send Skubal to the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for three highly regarded prospects: Jurrangelo Cijntje, Brandon Clarke, and Tai Peete.

Cijntje would headline the package. The unique switch-pitching prospect, capable of throwing with both arms, is considered one of the most intriguing young pitchers in baseball. After joining the Cardinals organization during the offseason, he has shown encouraging development and possesses significant upside.
Clarke would give Detroit another high-ceiling arm. The hard-throwing left-hander is currently recovering from shoulder surgery but is viewed as one of the most talented pitching prospects in the Cardinals system thanks to his power fastball and swing-and-miss breaking ball.
Peete would provide athleticism and long-term potential in the outfield. The former first-round pick has displayed a blend of power and speed in the minor leagues and could eventually become an impact player if he continues to develop.
For Detroit, the return would add multiple premium prospects who could help accelerate a rebuild. For St. Louis, the move would strengthen its rotation with a proven frontline starter capable of leading a postseason push once healthy.
While the cost would be substantial, the Cardinals possess enough prospect depth to make such a move without sacrificing several of their most highly regarded young talents. If Skubal returns to full health, acquiring him could significantly improve St. Louis’ chances of making a deep playoff run and competing for a championship.
