Kentucky Basketball Adds Experienced Transfer Forward Justin McBride to 2026-27 Roster
The Kentucky Wildcats men’s basketball strengthened its roster for the 2026–27 season on Tuesday night by securing a commitment from former James Madison Dukes men’s basketball forward Justin McBride, giving head coach Mark Pope another experienced addition through the transfer portal.
According to a report from On3 insider Joe Tipton, McBride chose Kentucky after a breakout 2025–26 campaign at James Madison in which he emerged as one of the most productive forwards in the transfer portal. The 6-foot-8 forward averaged more than 15 points and 5 rebounds per game while becoming a focal point of the Dukes’ offense during his lone season with the program.
McBride’s biggest leap came as a perimeter shooter. During the 2025–26 season, he connected on over 40 percent of his three-point attempts, showcasing a dramatic improvement from previous years and establishing himself as a legitimate floor-spacing threat. His long-range shooting became a major part of his offensive breakout and is likely one of the key reasons Kentucky prioritized him in the portal.
While his single-season shooting numbers were impressive, McBride’s full college résumé presents a slightly more mixed picture. Across his collegiate career, he has shot 33.3 percent from beyond the arc and 67 percent from the free-throw line, suggesting Kentucky is betting that his recent jump in efficiency reflects genuine development rather than a one-year outlier.
Still, there is reason for optimism. McBride not only posted his best shooting percentages last season, but also did so while taking a career-high 3.1 three-point attempts per game and 3.8 free-throw attempts per contest. That increased volume indicates his offensive production was not simply the result of limited opportunities, but rather a reflection of his growing confidence and expanded role.
Kentucky hopes McBride’s skill set will translate smoothly to the rugged competition of the Southeastern Conference, where his ability to stretch the floor and contribute as a versatile forward could make him an immediate impact player. Given the Wildcats’ current roster construction, McBride has a realistic path to earning a starting role next season.
The commitment also continues a winding collegiate journey for McBride, who will now join his fourth program in as many stops. He began his career at Oklahoma State Cowboys men’s basketball before transferring to Nevada Wolf Pack men’s basketball and later to James Madison. His previous stops featured mostly reserve roles, but he finally broke through in a major way last season by starting 30 games and becoming one of James Madison’s top contributors.
McBride’s commitment comes at an important moment for Kentucky. His pledge was announced less than an hour before elite five-star prospect Tyran Stokes revealed his commitment to Kansas Jayhawks men’s basketball over Kentucky, softening the blow of missing out on one of the nation’s premier recruits.
With McBride now in the fold, Kentucky continues to reshape its roster through the portal. He becomes the Wildcats’ third transfer commitment of the current cycle as the coaching staff remains active in building a roster capable of contending nationally in 2026–27.
For Kentucky, McBride represents both experience and upside — a proven scorer coming off a breakout season who may be ready for an even bigger stage in Lexington.
