The St. Louis Cardinals have added left-handed pitcher Luis Peralta to the organization after claiming him off waivers from the Colorado Rockies on Monday, giving the club another bullpen arm with intriguing upside despite recent struggles.
Peralta, the younger brother of Freddy Peralta, joins the Cardinals organization after spending the entire 2026 season at Triple-A Albuquerque in the Rockies’ system. While his raw stuff has remained impressive, his results this year have been rough. In just 7.1 innings at Albuquerque, the 24-year-old surrendered 14 earned runs while posting 14 strikeouts against 13 walks, highlighting both his swing-and-miss ability and ongoing command issues.
The Cardinals are clearly betting on Peralta’s upside rather than his recent production. Across his major league opportunities to this point, the hard-throwing lefty owns a 6.03 ERA with 30 strikeouts and 23 walks in 31.1 innings. Those numbers reflect the same profile scouts have long seen in him — a pitcher with electric strikeout potential but inconsistent control that has prevented him from establishing himself at the highest level.
Even with the struggles, Peralta’s minor league strikeout numbers remain encouraging. He has produced a 30.2 percent strikeout rate in the minors during his professional career, showing the kind of bat-missing arsenal that can make him an intriguing developmental project for an organization willing to refine his mechanics and command. However, his 13.9 percent walk rate also illustrates why he has yet to stick in a major league bullpen consistently.
For the Cardinals, this move represents a low-risk attempt to add depth to their pitching pipeline. Left-handed relievers with strikeout stuff are always valuable commodities, and the front office may believe their player development staff can help Peralta harness his command and unlock more consistent production. If he can improve his control even modestly, his stuff gives him a legitimate chance to contribute at the major league level.
Peralta will initially report to Triple-A Memphis, where he is expected to work with the Cardinals’ pitching development staff while attempting to regain form. The organization is likely to take a patient approach as they evaluate whether mechanical adjustments or role changes can help maximize his talent.
