Kentucky Officially Addsto 2026-27 Basketball Roster
The University of Kentucky men’s basketball program has added another young talent to its future roster, officially announcing the signing of guard Zyon Hawthorne for the 2026-27 season.
Hawthorne, a standout high school senior who spent this past season at Huntington Prep, becomes the latest addition to Kentucky’s incoming class as the Wildcats continue building for the future under head coach Mark Pope.

The 6-foot-2 combo guard arrives in Lexington after a highly productive senior campaign in which he averaged 11.2 points, 7.0 assists, and 3.0 rebounds per game. Known for his playmaking ability and versatility in the backcourt, Hawthorne demonstrated his all-around impact throughout the season while competing against elite prep competition.
One of his most impressive performances came during Big Shots Nationals, one of the nation’s premier prep basketball showcases, where Hawthorne posted double-doubles in all three of his appearances against top-level opponents. His strong play on that stage further boosted his reputation as one of the more underrated guards in the region.
Before transferring to Huntington Prep, Hawthorne starred for three seasons at Woodrow Wilson High School in Beckley, West Virginia. During his time there, he earned both all-region and all-state honors while developing into one of the most accomplished players in school history.
By the conclusion of his junior season, Hawthorne ranked third all-time in school history in assists, highlighting the court vision and passing ability that have become trademarks of his game. He also surpassed the 1,000-point milestone during his high school career, demonstrating that he can score efficiently in addition to creating opportunities for teammates.
Hawthorne also gained valuable experience on the AAU circuit, where he played for WV Gold during his freshman and sophomore years. His strong performances on the grassroots stage helped him gain additional exposure and eventually earned him an invitation to the prestigious Wooten Top 150 Camp, an event featuring many of the nation’s top high school prospects.
Off the court, Hawthorne has also excelled academically. He carries an impressive 4.25 GPA, adding another layer to his profile as a disciplined and well-rounded student-athlete.
His commitment to Kentucky carries added personal significance, as Hawthorne has been a lifelong Wildcats fan and now gets the opportunity to play for the program he grew up supporting.
The decision also keeps the Hawthorne family firmly connected to Kentucky basketball. Zyon is the younger brother of current Wildcat Braydon Hawthorne, who is entering his second season in Lexington after redshirting during his freshman year.
Zyon chose Kentucky over several other scholarship offers, including interest from Wichita State University, Arkansas State University, Radford University, La Salle University, and Bethune-Cookman University.
With his combination of scoring ability, playmaking instincts, basketball IQ, and familiarity with the program, Hawthorne could develop into a valuable future contributor for Kentucky.
As the Wildcats continue shaping their roster for the coming seasons, adding a talented and motivated hometown-style recruit like Hawthorne gives the program another promising piece for the future.
