Kentucky Makes Late Push for 5-Star Forward Ahead of Commitment Decision
Mark Pope and the Kentucky coaching staff are making a final recruiting push for one of the top available young prospects in the 2026 class as five-star forward Miikka Muurinen prepares to announce his college commitment Monday morning at 10 a.m. ET.
With the recruiting landscape moving rapidly in the transfer portal era, programs across the country are working nonstop to secure talent, and Kentucky appears determined to stay aggressive until the very end. Pope has reportedly jumped back into the mix in recent days in hopes of pulling off a late recruiting win for one of the nation’s most intriguing frontcourt prospects.

European Journey Did Not Go as Planned
Before returning his focus to college basketball, Muurinen took an unconventional path by leaving the United States to continue his development professionally in Europe. The Finnish standout joined Serbian powerhouse Partizan Belgrade, hoping the EuroLeague experience would accelerate his NBA trajectory.
However, things did not unfold the way many expected.
Muurinen struggled to carve out a consistent role overseas, averaging just 4.1 points and 2.9 rebounds per game while seeing limited minutes. His opportunities reportedly became even scarcer after legendary coach Zeljko Obradovic departed and a new coaching staff took over.
The talented forward acknowledged the challenges of adjusting to the professional European environment but maintained that the experience helped him grow.
Now with his overseas stint behind him, Muurinen has turned his attention fully toward the college game, where NIL opportunities and a larger role make the NCAA an attractive option.
Kentucky Among Finalists
Muurinen’s final group includes a loaded list of national contenders:
University of Kentucky, Duke University, University of North Carolina, University of Michigan, Indiana University, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, North Carolina State University, Brigham Young University, and University of Arkansas.
While Kentucky was once heavily linked to Muurinen earlier in his recruitment, contact had cooled when he began exploring professional and NBA options. But momentum shifted significantly over the weekend as Pope and his staff re-entered the race with renewed urgency.
Why Muurinen Would Be a Major Addition
Landing Muurinen would give Kentucky a major boost in the frontcourt—especially if highly regarded big man Malachi Moreno remains in the NBA Draft.
At 6-foot-10, Muurinen is viewed by many scouts as one of the most versatile forwards in his class. His game has drawn comparisons to Lauri Markkanen because of his ability to stretch the floor, score at every level, and seamlessly play both inside and outside.
He brings a rare combination of size, athleticism, and perimeter skill that could transform Kentucky’s lineup immediately.
If both Muurinen and Moreno are on the roster next season, Kentucky could field one of the most physically dominant and lengthy starting lineups in college basketball.
A potential lineup featuring Zoom Diallo at point guard, Alex Wilkins at shooting guard, Kam Williams on the wing, Muurinen at power forward, and Moreno in the paint would present matchup nightmares on both ends of the floor.
Decision Looms Monday
Kentucky’s late recruiting surge has created real intrigue heading into Monday’s announcement. What once seemed unlikely now appears very much in play.
The Wildcats are hoping Pope’s last-minute recruiting efforts can deliver one of the biggest additions of the offseason and bring the Finnish star to Lexington.
By Monday morning, Big Blue Nation will know whether Kentucky’s dramatic push was enough to land one of the premier young talents in basketball.
