How Come Belichick and Harbaugh Are Listed as Mike McCarthy’s Fired Replacements?
Under Mike McCarthy, the Cowboys have recently completed their third straight 12-win campaign. Is a coaching change in Dallas actually in the works? Why are Belichick and Harbaugh being brought up?
Under head coach Mike McCarthy, the Dallas Cowboys are getting ready for their third postseason trip in the last four years. Under McCarthy’s direction, Dallas also recently celebrated its third consecutive 12-win campaign and its second NFC East division championship.
Although it’s usually a good idea to “never say never,” owner Jerry Jones “has no plans” to fire McCarthy, according to our Mike Fisher. Jerry has now effectively stated the same thing on Tuesday, saying, “It’s not a problem because Mike is under contract for next year; I’m not sure how I could be any clearer on that.” I’m rather happy with what he accomplished. This year, he is the main difference.
Based on that achievement, that report and those statements, it’s hard to conceive that a change as head coach may be imminent for the Cowboys. Nonetheless, there are a lot of whispers that Jones won’t make a change unless the team makes a deep playoff run that includes a Super Bowl trip.
Why? And with whom? In response to the second query, “who are Jim Harbaugh and (yes, once more) Bill Belichick?” And now for the action…

Perfect, right? Nope. That’s not how this works at all. This lacks sourcing, thus we’ll raise some concerns: For what reason is Harbaugh a big improvement over McCarthy? Since moving to Dallas in 2020, the current Cowboys head coach is 40-25 during the regular season and has a 165-100-2 career record. McCarthy has led Dallas to a 1-2 record in the postseason with varying degrees of success. McCarthy has an 11-10 career record and one Super Bowl victory from his time with the Packers.
During his four seasons as head coach of the 49ers, Harbaugh amassed a 44-19-1 record, albeit the team lost the 2012 Super Bowl to the Ravens and his brother, John.
