The Seattle Mariners are still dealing with the aftermath of “Handshake-gate,” sitting at 3-4 and fourth in the AL West. If team chemistry continues to be an issue, a roster move could be necessary to spark change.
FanSided’s Austin Owens proposed a deal that would reunite the Mariners with the Tampa Bay Rays, targeting All-Star and Silver Slugger Yandy Díaz. While the trade wouldn’t solely be about it, such a move could also help smooth things over for Randy Arozarena, who was among those affected by the WBC controversy.

Owens noted that Mariners fans, after enduring years without postseason success, have shown they deserve meaningful October baseball. He pointed to last season’s electric atmosphere at T-Mobile Park and argued the front office should aggressively pursue upgrades after falling just short of the ALCS. Strengthening the lineup remains a priority, and Díaz is a name to watch as the trade market develops. Adding him, Owens suggested, could make Seattle’s offense one of the most dangerous in the American League, particularly at the top of the order.
Díaz has been outstanding so far this season, hitting .429/.448/.679 with a 1.127 OPS. He leads MLB with 12 hits, including two home runs, and tops the American League with eight RBIs. His balanced approach at the plate would be a major boost for a Mariners lineup that often leans more toward power than contact.
His contract also adds to his appeal. The 34-year-old is earning $12 million this season and has a $10 million conditional club option for next year, which becomes active if he reaches 500 plate appearances.
For Seattle, acquiring Díaz before the trade deadline could help stabilize the clubhouse while adding much-needed consistency to the offense.
