Games between the New York Rangers and New Jersey Devils are always intense, but Tuesday night’s 4-1 win at Madison Square Garden delivered a moment fans hadn’t seen in nearly three decades.
Midway through the third period, chaos erupted behind the net after a collision involving Paul Cotter. What followed was something truly rare—Igor Shesterkin dropped the gloves and engaged in a full-on fight.
With tensions escalating, Devils goalie Jacob Markstrom skated the length of the ice to challenge Shesterkin. The Rangers star didn’t hesitate, removing his mask and gloves before ultimately taking down the much larger Markstrom. The moment marked the first time a Rangers goalie had fought since Dan Cloutier squared off with Tommy Salo back in 1998.
Shesterkin later joked about the incident, saying he had always imagined his first fight might come against his friend Ilya Sorokin. Instead, when Markstrom approached, his focus was simply on not getting knocked out, crediting a few boxing lessons for helping him hold his own.
While goals from Conor Sheary, J.T. Miller, Mika Zibanejad, and Jaroslav Chmelař sealed the win, the night ultimately belonged to Shesterkin’s electrifying moment.

In what has otherwise been a disappointing season, the fight injected life into the Rangers’ fanbase. Still, it also sparked mixed emotions. Under president and GM Chris Drury, the team is searching for identity and consistency, and while this display of passion was encouraging, it also left many wondering why that intensity didn’t show up earlier.
For fans, the moment was both thrilling and bittersweet—a reminder of the team’s potential, but also of what might have been lost in a season that appears to be slipping away.
