New York Rangers Injury Update: Arthur Kaliyev Out for Season with Upper-Body Injury
Arthur Kaliyev’s challenging season has come to an early end due to another significant injury. The New York Rangers announced on Tuesday that Kaliyev will miss the remainder of the season, including the Stanley Cup Playoffs, due to an upper-body injury.
The 23-year-old forward had already missed the past three games after suffering the injury during a 2-1 loss to the Winnipeg Jets on March 11. It remains unclear whether this latest setback is connected to the fractured clavicle he sustained in September while still with the Los Angeles Kings. That injury kept him sidelined for nearly four months before he was claimed off waivers by the Rangers on January 6. He did not play a game for the Kings this season before joining New York.
Kaliyev’s Tough Luck Continues
Kaliyev’s season took another unfortunate turn in Winnipeg. After being a healthy scratch for seven consecutive games, he returned to the lineup only to be checked hard by Jets defenseman Luke Schenn, forcing him to exit the game. He later flew back home and was placed on injured reserve.
In 14 games with the Rangers, Kaliyev recorded four points (three goals, one assist). His best performance came on January 21, when he scored in a 5-0 win against the Ottawa Senators—though a second goal in that game was overturned due to an offside call on video review.
A Short-Lived Homecoming
Kaliyev, who spent part of his youth on Staten Island, was thrilled when the Rangers claimed him off waivers, calling it a “dream come true.”
“I didn’t expect it, but it’s amazing,” Kaliyev said at the time. “I grew up watching the Rangers and attending games at Madison Square Garden. It’s crazy—there’s not much more to say.”
Despite glimpses of potential, Kaliyev struggled to establish a permanent role. Coach Peter Laviolette acknowledged his shooting ability and contributions, but also noted there was room for growth.
“He’s coming back from an injury and adjusting to a new team,” Laviolette said. “There have been times when he’s been productive, but there’s still areas to improve.”
Originally a 2019 second-round pick by the Kings, Kaliyev showed promise early in his career, scoring 14 goals in 2021-22 and 13 in 2022-23, when he also posted a career-high 28 points. However, injuries and inconsistency have slowed his progress, and now his focus will shift toward recovery and preparing for next season.
