Nationals Place Four Players on Injured List Ahead of Opening Day
The Washington Nationals have finalized their Opening Day roster with several key roster moves, including the placement of four players on the injured list, retroactive to March 24.
Injury Updates:
- 15-Day IL:
- Derek Law (RHP, forearm inflammation) – The veteran reliever has been dealing with lingering discomfort since last season but expects to return when eligible on April 8.
- Zach Brzykcy (RHP, right quad strain) – Sidelined for over a month, Brzykcy has resumed bullpen sessions but may need more time before returning to game action.
- Cade Cavalli (RHP, Tommy John recovery) – Entering the final stages of rehab, Cavalli is working toward a return later this season.
- 10-Day IL:
- Andres Chaparro (INF, oblique strain) – Suffered the injury during batting practice, with a mid-April return as the best-case scenario.
Additional Roster Moves:
- DJ Herz (LHP) was transferred to the 60-day IL due to a UCL tear, potentially requiring Tommy John surgery. His move cleared a 40-man roster spot for right-hander Brad Lord.
- Juan Yepez (1B/OF) and Jackson Rutledge (RHP) were optioned to Triple-A.
- Catcher Andrew Knizner was reassigned to Triple-A.
Impact on the Nationals’ Roster:
- With Law and Rutledge unavailable, Washington finalized its bullpen with Brad Lord and rookie Orlando Ribalta filling the final two spots.
- The bench will consist of Riley Adams (backup catcher), Amed Rosario (utility infielder), Jose Tena (backup infielder), and Alex Call (fourth outfielder).
As the Nationals prepare for the season opener, these injuries and roster decisions will play a key role in shaping their early-season depth and bullpen strategy.
