MLB Rumors: Red Sox Expected to Acquire Marlins’ $56M Ace in Trade
The Boston Red Sox had a busy offseason, making significant roster upgrades after missing the playoffs in recent years. Chief baseball officer Craig Breslow bolstered the team by acquiring ace Garrett Crochet, starter Walker Buehler, and third baseman Alex Bregman. However, the team may not be done making moves.
In his 2025 predictions, MLB insider Jim Bowden forecasts that the Red Sox will land Miami Marlins ace Sandy Alcantara. According to Bowden, Boston would trade right fielder Wilyer Abreu along with a package of prospects—including right-hander Luis Perales, infielder Franklin Arias, and right-hander Juan Valera—to acquire the former Cy Young winner.
The Red Sox have rebuilt their farm system into one of the league’s best. Top prospect Kristian Campbell is expected to begin the season in the majors at second base, while Roman Anthony and Marcelo Mayer could also make their big-league debuts this year. Adding Alcantara to a rotation already featuring Crochet and Buehler would give Boston one of the strongest pitching staffs in MLB. If the Red Sox are in playoff contention, it seems likely that Breslow would pursue such a move.
Red Sox Rotation Could Be Elite with Alcantara
The proposed trade is one that Boston can afford, as Abreu, who had a solid rookie season, could be replaced internally—potentially by Anthony. The organization is hopeful that Campbell, Anthony, and Mayer will make an impact in 2025, which could strengthen their playoff push.
While parting with a promising prospect package would be costly, acquiring Alcantara could be a game-changer, especially if he returns to his Cy Young form. If Buehler and Crochet perform well in their first seasons with the team, Breslow may continue his aggressive approach to push the Red Sox toward title contention. A trade of this magnitude could set the stage for Boston’s 10th World Series championship.
