The Kentucky Wildcats football program has made a proactive move in securing its future at quarterback, landing a commitment from 2027 QB DJ Hunter. A standout at Bearden High School in Knoxville, Tennessee, Hunter made his decision after a recent unofficial visit to Lexington, marking him as the first member of Kentucky’s 2027 recruiting class. At 6-foot-2 and 195 pounds, Hunter has made a name for himself with impressive individual performances despite facing challenges. After transferring from Horn Lake High School in Mississippi, Hunter played just eight games in 2023 due to injury but still racked up 1,431 passing yards and nine touchdowns while completing 76 of 142 passes. Additionally, he rushed for three touchdowns, showing his dual-threat ability.
Although currently unranked due to his class year, Hunter has already caught the attention of scouts for his strong arm, mobility, and composure in the pocket. His leadership at a new school further highlights his long-term potential as a top quarterback prospect. Hunter’s rise has positioned him as one of the Southeast’s most intriguing underclassmen.
Kentucky’s early pursuit of Hunter underscores the program’s commitment to shaping the 2027 class, with head coach Mark Stoops and offensive coordinator Bush Hamdan playing pivotal roles in building a connection with him. After visiting Kentucky in late March, followed by trips to Tennessee and Virginia, Hunter decided to commit shortly after his time in Lexington.
“What stood out to me the most is how hard they were recruiting me and the culture they have there,” Hunter said after committing. “I like the plan that they have for the future, and I see myself in that plan.” Kentucky offered Hunter a scholarship on January 30, with Hamdan and offensive line coach Eric Wolford leading the charge in crafting that vision for his future.
While Hunter’s commitment is non-binding, it is a significant step for Kentucky, marking the second time in three recruiting cycles that the Wildcats have secured a quarterback early in the process. As Hunter continues to develop, it’s likely that his rising profile will result in increased attention from recruiting services. His early success and natural talent provide Kentucky with a solid foundation for future growth, giving the Wildcats a valuable head start for their 2027 class.
