Auburn University just received a major boost in its 2026 recruiting class, as top quarterback prospect Travis Burgess appears to be nearing a commitment. According to On3 Recruits, Burgess — a standout from Grayson High School in Loganville, Georgia — is expected to make his decision after spring practices wrap up.
The battle for Burgess is intensifying, with Auburn and North Carolina emerging as the frontrunners. Burgess, one of the most sought-after quarterbacks in the 2026 cycle, has been a key target for Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze. Freeze, who emphasizes quarterback development, has prioritized Burgess and welcomed him for an unofficial visit in late March. During the visit, Burgess spoke highly of Freeze’s coaching and the overall atmosphere at Auburn, ranking the school in his top five alongside North Carolina, Wisconsin, and Duke.
However, recent developments point to a two-horse race between the Tigers and the Tar Heels. At 6-foot-2, Burgess is known for his arm strength and playmaking skills, and he would be a cornerstone of Auburn’s 2026 class — which already features elite wide receiver Devin Carter.
As Auburn aims to bounce back from back-to-back seven-loss seasons, landing a talent like Burgess could mark a turning point and set a new course for success in the SEC. With spring practice ongoing, all eyes are on Burgess as his decision draws near.
