Nationals Secure Promising Pitching Prospect in Latest MLB Mock Draft
The Washington Nationals bolstered their farm system with another young arm, selecting a highly regarded high school pitcher in a recent mock draft.
With the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 MLB Draft, the Nationals hold significant influence over the rest of the league’s selections. Baseball America recently released a mock draft predicting Washington would take right-handed pitcher Seth Hernandez from Corona (Calif.) High School.
While some fans may have hoped for infielder Ethan Holliday—brother of Orioles prospect Jackson Holliday—Baseball America sees no clear top choice this year. Hernandez, ranked as the fourth-best prospect, possesses elite velocity, reaching 100 mph, along with a sharp change-up and two strong breaking pitches. Analysts believe he has “ace potential.”
If Washington goes with Hernandez, it would mark their first first-round pitcher selection since 2020, when they drafted Cade Cavalli. Recent first-round picks have focused on position players, including Dylan Crews, Brady House, Elijah Green, and Seaver King.
The 2025 MLB Draft is set for July 13-14 during All-Star Weekend in Atlanta. The draft order will be impacted by penalties to teams like the Dodgers, Mets, and Yankees for exceeding the Competitive Balance Tax threshold.
