Blue Jays, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Reportedly Nearing $500 Million Contract Extension
As the 2025 MLB season kicked off, the Toronto Blue Jays and their star slugger Vladimir Guerrero Jr. had yet to finalize a new contract, despite ongoing negotiations. Guerrero is set to become a free agent after this season, with his current deal expiring at the end of 2025. Reports indicated he was seeking a contract worth $500 million in present value, a figure Toronto initially couldn’t match.
However, just days into the new season, fresh information has emerged. According to reporter Mike Rodriguez, Guerrero and the Blue Jays are now very close to finalizing a long-term extension exceeding $500 million. Rodriguez, who previously broke stories like Jurickson Profar’s suspension and Ketel Marte’s extension, shared the news on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday.
The timing of this development is notable, coming during Toronto’s road game against the New York Mets and Juan Soto. If completed, the deal could significantly alter the offseason plans for multiple teams.
Guerrero, who turned 26 in March, has been vocal about his desire to remain in Toronto, saying, “I love this city. I love these fans.” Having spent his entire MLB career with the Blue Jays, he now appears on the verge of committing to the franchise for the long haul.
