Phillies Encouraged to Explore Trade for $50 Million Center Fielder
Despite being just 12 games into the season, doubts are already surfacing about the Philadelphia Phillies’ decision to use Brandon Marsh as their everyday center fielder. On Thursday, Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller proposed a list of potential trade options, with former All-Star Luis Robert Jr. of the Chicago White Sox among the top suggestions.
Robert had a standout 2023 season, earning an All-Star selection while hitting .264/.315/.542 with career highs in home runs (38), doubles (36), RBIs (80), and runs scored (90). He also showed off his speed with 20 stolen bases. The 26-year-old is currently under a six-year, $50 million contract signed in 2020, which includes $20 million club options for both the 2026 and 2027 seasons.
Is Luis Robert Jr. a Fit in Philly?
A couple of years ago, trading for Robert would’ve been a no-brainer for the Phillies given his combination of power and speed. On top of his All-Star nod in 2023, he also secured a Silver Slugger Award.
However, his production took a hit last season. Robert batted just .224 with a .647 OPS after suffering a Grade 2 right hip flexor strain in April. While he returned after two months, the injury seemed to hamper his swing. His struggles have continued into this season — through his first 11 games, Robert is hitting .154 with a .424 OPS and has just one extra-base hit.
Miller acknowledged the slow start but pointed out that teams will still be interested in Robert as the trade deadline approaches.
“He’ll absolutely be available to the highest bidder, and there’s still time for him to turn things around,” Miller noted.
Other Trade Targets for the Phillies
If Robert doesn’t rebound, or if the bidding war gets too competitive, the Phillies may look elsewhere to address their center field issue. Miller also listed Baltimore’s Cedric Mullins and Cleveland’s Lane Thomas as potential alternatives.
Mullins, in particular, could be an appealing target. He’s in the final year of his contract before becoming a free agent and is off to a strong start, batting .286 with a .971 OPS, three homers, and three doubles in his first 12 games. Miller added that Baltimore might be open to dealing him due to their surplus of young talent — even if they stay in playoff contention.
Meanwhile, Marsh’s performance so far has only added urgency to the Phillies’ potential need for reinforcements. The 26-year-old is hitting .133/.257/.233 through 11 games, struggling to find his rhythm at the plate. Free agent addition Max Kepler, who’s mainly playing left field, isn’t providing much more spark with a .237 average and .724 OPS.
As summer approaches, the Phillies may be forced to upgrade in center field — whether that’s by betting on Robert’s rebound or pursuing another veteran outfielder like Mullins.
