Phillies Send Fan-Favorite Catcher to Minors, Shake Up Backup Role
The Philadelphia Phillies are making changes behind the plate for the 2025 season, opting for a new backup catcher.
Garrett Stubbs Loses Roster Spot to Rafael Marchán
According to CBS Sports’ R.J. Anderson, the Phillies have demoted backup catcher Garrett Stubbs to Triple-A Lehigh Valley, paving the way for Rafael Marchán to serve as J.T. Realmuto’s backup.
Despite Stubbs posting a stronger offensive performance in Spring Training—hitting .286/.423/.381 with four RBIs compared to Marchán’s .250/.357/.292 with three RBIs—the Phillies prioritized defense and roster flexibility. Marchán maintained a flawless 1.000 fielding percentage, whereas Stubbs committed an error and posted a .980 fielding percentage.
Phillies Prioritize Depth Over Performance
A key factor in the decision was Marchán’s lack of minor league options. To avoid losing him, the Phillies chose to carry him on the Opening Day roster while sending Stubbs to Triple-A.
While Stubbs, 31, will begin the season in the minors, there’s still a strong chance he returns to the big-league club at some point in 2025.
