How the Nationals Can Repair Their Bullpen Issues

Yesterday was just the latest proof that the Washington Nationals bullpen is in dire need of a rebuild. The relievers signed by GM Mike Rizzo—Jorge Lopez, Lucas Sims, and Colin Poche—have all struggled mightily, each carrying ERAs north of 10.00.

Rizzo needs to act fast. The solutions aren’t ideal, but he has a few paths to explore: promote from within, sign remaining free agents, or scour the waiver wire.

Internal Reinforcements:
One of the first steps Washington could take is tapping into its own system. Promising young pitchers like Jackson Rutledge and Cole Henry deserve a bigger shot. While they may be inexperienced, their performances have been far more encouraging than the veterans’.

Rutledge has mostly been used in long relief, but he might be more effective in short stints. His velocity and stuff look sharper early in outings. As for Henry, his injury history calls for caution, but he’s been impressive in his limited action.

There are also intriguing names in the minors. Konnor Pilkington, a lefty striking out batters in Triple-A Rochester, has major league experience. Marquis Grissom Jr., still in Double-A, could be worth fast-tracking. The 23-year-old has a deadly changeup and excellent control—qualities the Nats badly need.

Derek Law’s return date remains unclear, but he could help once healthy. Zach Brzykcy is currently on a rehab assignment. Another X-factor is Cade Cavalli, who showed electric stuff in a recent rehab start. Though he’s a starter, moving him to the bullpen could provide immediate impact and fill a more urgent need.

Available Free Agents:
It’s slim pickings in free agency this late in the season, but a few veteran arms are still out there. David Robertson is the most established, though he may not be interested in joining the Nationals. Other options include Will Smith, Adam Cimber, NA Joe Kelly, Joely Rodriguez, and Drew Smyly. None are major upgrades, but any could offer a boost over the current group.
