The Washington Nationals showcased two promising prospects during their Spring Breakout game, offering a glimpse of potential future contributors at the Major League level.
On Friday, the Nationals’ Spring Breakout squad took on the Houston Astros at CACTI Park of the Palm Beaches in West Palm Beach, Fla. These exhibition games highlight top young talent, many of whom have yet to make their MLB debuts.
Notably absent was Dylan Crews, Washington’s No. 1 prospect, who is preparing to start the season as the team’s Opening Day right fielder. However, two other young outfielders made their mark with home runs.
Andrew Pinckney homered early in the game, followed later by Elijah Green.
Green, a high-profile prospect, was selected fifth overall in the 2022 draft. The son of former NFL tight end Eric Green, he signed with the Nationals for a $6.5 million bonus. Baseball America has recognized his elite power, though he continues to refine his hitting. Last season at Class-A Fredericksburg, he hit .208 with 13 home runs and 54 RBI, struggling with strikeouts (40% of his at-bats). MLB Pipeline estimates he could reach the Majors by 2026.
Pinckney, the Nationals’ No. 26 prospect, is closer to MLB readiness. The 24-year-old, a fourth-round pick in 2023, advanced quickly through the minors, hitting .321 across four affiliates last season. He spent time in Double-A and Triple-A, where his numbers dipped but remained solid. However, with Crews, Jacob Young, and James Wood ahead of him in the outfield, he may need an injury or roster move to break into the big leagues.
For now, Pinckney appears prepared for the season, while Green continues his development with an eye on the future.
