Buffalo Bills running back James Cook appears to be preparing for life beyond Buffalo after failing to secure a contract extension.
Cook has been vocal about his desire for a new deal, reportedly seeking $15 million per year to join the league’s highest-paid running backs. However, Bills general manager Brandon Beane shut down the idea, stating that there has been no movement toward an extension.
Now, Cook may be sending a message of his own.
James Cook Puts Buffalo Home on the Market
According to WIVB-4 in Buffalo, Cook has listed his Orchard Park residence for sale, with the property originally purchased under an LLC owned by his brother, former NFL star Dalvin Cook.
While there is no confirmation that Cook is leaving immediately, the move could indicate his preparations for a potential departure when his contract expires at the end of the season.
“The listing suggests Cook isn’t moving right away,” the report noted. “But with free agency on the horizon, it’s a logical step in preparing for a future outside of Buffalo.”
Bills Show No Signs of Extending Cook
The Bills have prioritized contract extensions for several key players this offseason, including Christian Benford, Khalil Shakir, and Greg Rousseau. However, negotiations for Cook remain stalled.
Beane expressed admiration for Cook but emphasized that he expects the running back to prove his worth in his contract year.
“I think Jimbo is a pro. I respect him and love him to death,” Beane said, via SI.com. “If we’re not aligned on value, he’ll have the chance to prove it this season—not just to us, but to the entire league.”
Cook had a stellar 2024 season, leading the NFL with 16 rushing touchdowns and becoming the first Bills running back since LeSean McCoy to post consecutive 1,000-yard seasons.
However, under Beane’s leadership, the Bills have yet to extend a drafted running back, previously parting ways with Zack Moss and Devin Singletary rather than committing to long-term deals.
With no extension in sight, Cook’s future in Buffalo remains uncertain, and his latest move could be a sign that he’s preparing to explore his options elsewhere.
