Virginia Tech Makes Impactful Hire, Bringing Back Chester Frazier
Who says you can’t go home again?
Virginia Tech head coach Mike Young suffered a significant loss when top assistant Chester Frazier left after the 2020-21 season. Though Young replaced him with Mike Jones, the impact was never quite the same. Jones later departed after two seasons to take a similar role at Maryland, leaving another gap on the coaching staff.
On Tuesday, the Hokies officially announced Frazier’s return as associate head coach. After leaving Virginia Tech in 2021, Frazier joined his alma mater, Illinois, as an assistant, where he spent three seasons. In 2024, newly appointed West Virginia head coach Darian DeVries hired Frazier as his top assistant. However, after just one year, DeVries accepted the head coaching job at Indiana, opening the door for Frazier to explore other opportunities.
Now, Frazier replaces Christian Webster, whom Young parted ways with after the season. Despite having multiple options, Frazier saw a return to Blacksburg as the ideal move for both his family and career, reuniting with a coach he deeply respects.
“We are thrilled to welcome Chester, his wife Sarah, and their children—Chandler, Cameron, and Courtney—back to Blacksburg,” Young said. “His passion, energy, and tireless work ethic are exactly what we need. Chester understands our program’s culture, excels in recruiting, and has a proven track record of player development. He’s been a winner everywhere he’s coached, and I’m excited to work alongside him again.”
Frazier also expressed enthusiasm about his return to Virginia Tech.
“I’m beyond excited to be back at Virginia Tech,” Frazier said. “This is a special place with a passionate fan base, a strong culture, and a commitment to excellence. I’m looking forward to working with Coach Young and the staff to help bring this program back to where it belongs.”
Known for his relentless recruiting and defensive expertise, Frazier’s return could play a crucial role in securing top talent, especially through the transfer portal.
This is a significant hire for Young as he enters a pivotal season. With increased financial support expected for the program, the Hokies are in a strong position to attract high-caliber players. Bringing back Frazier is an excellent first step in that process.
