Former Bills Coach Brian Daboll Reflects on Josh Allen’s MVP Rise
Before becoming the head coach of the New York Giants, Brian Daboll served as the offensive coordinator for the Buffalo Bills. During his time in Buffalo, Daboll had a clear objective: to help mold a young and raw Josh Allen into one of the NFL’s elite quarterbacks. After four seasons together, Daboll successfully helped transform Allen into a franchise cornerstone.
Allen’s rise has been remarkable, and his recent MVP season is a testament to that progress. While speaking at league meetings last week, Daboll shared his admiration for Allen’s growth and success.
“I’m thrilled for him and his family,” Daboll said. “He’s an incredible person and a phenomenal football player. I couldn’t be prouder of how far he’s come in his development. He’s turned into an exceptional quarterback and done great things for that franchise.”
Allen capped off his MVP campaign with 40 total touchdowns and only six interceptions, guiding the Bills to the AFC Championship Game before falling to the Kansas City Chiefs.
The bond between Allen and Daboll remains strong. Reflecting on their relationship, Allen previously credited Daboll for playing a key role in his evolution as a quarterback.
“He’s been a huge part of my football journey and my life,” Allen said last season. “When it comes to understanding the game and learning how to handle the responsibilities of being an NFL quarterback, I leaned heavily on his experience and insights. We spent a lot of time together.”
Allen’s career trajectory might look very different without Daboll’s early influence, and the respect between the two remains mutual. Even with their paths now diverged, Daboll continues to cheer on his former quarterback and close friend.
