Eagles Quickly Sign Veteran to Replace Departing Free Agent

The Philadelphia Eagles boasted one of the NFL’s top offensive lines last season, but they’ve seen some turnover this offseason. Right guard Mekhi Becton signed a two-year, $20 million contract with the Los Angeles Chargers, while backup tackle Fred Johnson inked a one-year deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Johnson, who served as the team’s swing tackle, made a few starts in 2024. While not spectacular, he provided reliable depth. To address his departure, the Eagles quickly moved to sign a replacement.

According to Peter Schrager of NFL Network, Philadelphia has brought in veteran offensive tackle Kendall Lamm on a one-year deal. The well-traveled lineman will be joining his sixth NFL team.

“OT Kendall Lamm is signing a one-year deal with the Philadelphia Eagles, per sources. Jeff Stoutland gets the 32-year-old veteran for his Super Bowl-winning offensive line.”

Eagles Bolster O-Line Depth with Kendall Lamm

Lamm, originally signed as an undrafted free agent by the Houston Texans in 2015, started 20 games over four seasons in Houston, allowing 10 sacks. He then spent two seasons with the Cleveland Browns in a backup role, playing limited snaps.

His next stops included Tennessee and Detroit, where he continued as a reserve lineman. Most recently, Lamm spent three seasons with the Miami Dolphins, logging over 1,100 snaps and proving to be a solid pass protector. According to PFF, Miami had only three games during his tenure where their pass-blocking grade dipped below 60.

The Eagles hope Lamm won’t be called upon often, but if needed, offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland will have him prepared.

Eagles Preparing for Life After Lane Johnson

Following their Super Bowl victory, the Eagles have undergone considerable roster changes—an inevitable consequence of success in the NFL. Among their losses are Becton, Johnson, and running back Kenneth Gainwell. While Philadelphia did acquire lineman Kenyon Green from Houston in the C.J. Gardner-Johnson trade, their offensive line depth remains a concern, especially with veteran Lane Johnson approaching 35 years old.

Reports indicate that the Eagles are prioritizing offensive line prospects ahead of the NFL Draft. According to Brandon Lee Gowton of Bleeding Green Nation, the team has recently hosted four offensive tackle prospects for pre-draft visits.

Eagles Evaluating Offensive Line Prospects in Draft

The players under consideration include:

  • Josh Conerly Jr. (Oregon)
  • Marcus Mbow (Purdue)
  • Anthony Belton (NC State)
  • Jalen Travis (Iowa State)

Conerly, Belton, and Travis primarily play left tackle, while Mbow has experience at both guard and right tackle. Their interest in multiple tackle prospects suggests the Eagles are looking for a young lineman to develop under Stoutland as Lane Johnson nears the end of his career.

Philadelphia holds eight draft picks, all within the first five rounds. Conerly is projected as a late first- or early second-round selection and could be in play at No. 32 overall. Mbow and Belton are seen as third-round targets, while Travis may be a Day 3 pick or undrafted free agent candidate.

With their track record of developing elite offensive linemen, the Eagles hope to find another long-term solution up front. After losing key pieces this offseason, Philadelphia aims to keep its offensive line among the league’s best.
