Duke University football player has been charged with murder in the death of Whitney Elizabeth Hurd, who was found stabbed in a south Charlotte townhome in July. Brandon David Braxton, 33, of Charlotte, was arrested Thursday and faces charges of first-degree murder and robbery with a dangerous weapon, according to Mecklenburg County jail records. He remained in jail without bond as of Saturday. Braxton is accused of killing the 32-year-old Hurd in her home on Werburgh Street, then stealing her BMW and iPhone, court documents reveal.
Braxton, who played for Duke from 2010 to 2013, was a two-time Academic All-ACC selection. A wide receiver, he also played safety during the 2012 season. Braxton previously played at Providence High in Charlotte, where he was ranked the 94th-best wide receiver in the country and the 16th-best overall prospect in North Carolina by Scout.com. He also played one season at St. Ignatius High in Cleveland, Ohio. His father, David Braxton, was a defensive end at Wake Forest from 1986 to 1988 and was drafted in the second round of the 1989 NFL Draft by the Minnesota Vikings. Over his six-season NFL career, he also played for the Phoenix Cardinals and the Cincinnati Bengals.
Braxton faces several other charges, including two from 2024, according to The Charlotte Observer. He was accused of assaulting a woman on October 27, attempting to grab her shorts, and of indecent exposure after exposing himself to someone at the corner of Sixth and Church streets on the same day.
