Duke Basketball Faces Another Key Departure as Khaman Maluach Declares for NBA Draft
The Duke Blue Devils men’s basketball program is experiencing another significant roster change as freshman center Khaman Maluach has officially declared for the 2025 NBA Draft. Maluach’s decision adds to the list of key players departing from the team following their impressive run to the Final Four this past season.
Standing at 7-foot-2, the South Sudan native made a notable impact in his sole season with Duke. He averaged 8.6 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks per game, showcasing his defensive prowess and athleticism. His performance has positioned him as a projected lottery pick in the upcoming draft .
Maluach’s journey to this point is remarkable. Having grown up in Uganda as a refugee, he began playing basketball only a few years ago after being encouraged by a local motorcyclist. His rapid development led him to the NBA Academy Africa, and eventually to Duke, where he became a key contributor to the team’s success .
However, his transition to the professional level is not without challenges. Recent U.S. visa policy changes affecting South Sudanese nationals have raised concerns about his ability to travel and participate in certain NBA activities, particularly games held outside the United States. Despite these potential hurdles, Maluach’s talent and determination make him a compelling prospect for NBA teams .
With Maluach’s departure, along with those of Cooper Flagg, Kon Knueppel, Tyrese Proctor, and others, Duke will see a significant turnover in its roster. Head coach Jon Scheyer and his staff will be tasked with rebuilding and preparing a new group of players for the upcoming season.
The 2025 NBA Draft is scheduled for June 25, where Maluach is expected to be among the top selections.
