Three Mets Players Who Could See Their Roles Shrink — or Lose Their Roster Spots Altogether

The New York Mets have stormed out of the gate in 2025, exceeding expectations with an impressive 18-7 record — the best mark in Major League Baseball. They’ve built a commanding five-game lead over the Philadelphia Phillies in the NL East, even as stars like Juan Soto have yet to fully hit their stride. Despite the wave of optimism sweeping through Citi Field, the Mets believe their best baseball is still ahead.

But not every player has been riding the high. A few names have struggled to keep pace, and if their performances don’t improve, they could soon find themselves demoted or even cut from the roster. Here’s a look at three Mets who find themselves on increasingly shaky ground.

1. Danny Young
Among Mets fans, few players have drawn more frustration than left-handed reliever Danny Young. While the Mets bullpen as a whole has dominated — leading the majors in ERA — Young has been a glaring weak spot. In 7 1/3 innings of work this season, he’s posted a bloated 4.91 ERA, with 10 strikeouts, 3 walks, a 1.50 WHIP, and an ERA+ of just 81. Every time he takes the mound, it feels like collective anxiety sweeps through Citi Field.

Unfortunately for Young, this isn’t a new issue. In 2024, his first season in Queens, he struggled to a 4.54 ERA across 37 2/3 innings, with 38 strikeouts, 18 walks, a 1.248 WHIP, and an ERA+ of 87 — numbers that paint the picture of a pitcher unable to consistently handle high-pressure moments, especially under New York’s intense spotlight.

Given his ongoing struggles and the imminent return of more reliable arms, Young’s roster spot appears to be in serious jeopardy. One name expected to replace him is Dedniel Núñez, who was a standout in 2024 with a brilliant 2.31 ERA over 35 innings, racking up 48 strikeouts to just eight walks, with a sparkling 0.914 WHIP and an elite ERA+ of 170. With Núñez on the mend, Young’s time in a Mets uniform may be running out.
