Auburn Targeting Potential Replacement for Johni Broome
With star forward Johni Broome officially declaring for the 2025 NBA Draft on Thursday, the Auburn Tigers are now actively searching for his successor — and the transfer portal may hold the answer.
According to On3’s Joe Tipton, Auburn is among the final contenders for Florida State transfer Malique Ewin. Other schools in the mix include Kansas, Arkansas, Mississippi State, and Virginia. Ewin has already scheduled visits with Arkansas and Mississippi State as he evaluates his options.
Auburn’s season came to a close in the Final Four with a 79–73 loss to Florida, marking just the second time in program history that the Tigers reached that stage of the NCAA Tournament.
Ewin, once a four-star recruit in the 2022 class, ranks as the No. 12 power forward in the On3 Transfer Portal Industry Rankings. He began his college journey at Ole Miss, where he appeared in 14 games and averaged 1.4 points per contest. He then transferred to South Plains College (JUCO), where he emerged as the top-rated transfer in the 2023 class before landing at Florida State.
This past season with the Seminoles, Ewin finished second on the team in scoring, averaging 14.2 points, 7.6 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game — production that mirrors the versatility Auburn will be missing with Broome’s departure. Broome led the Tigers with 18.6 points, 10.8 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per game. At 6-foot-11, Ewin offers slightly more size than the 6-foot-10 Broome.
In the transfer portal, Auburn has already added former UCF forward Keyshawn Hall but lost small forward Jahki Howard. On the recruiting front, the Tigers hold 2025 commitments from four-star forward Sebastian Williams-Adams, four-star guards Kaden Magwood and Simon Walker, and JUCO center Abdul Bashir.
As Auburn looks to reload for next season, landing Ewin could be a major step toward filling the void left by Broome’s departure.
