
A Career Cut Short: Brighton Star Enock Mwepu Forced to Retire Due to Heart Condition
Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Enock Mwepu was forced to retire from football at the devastatingly young age of 24 after being diagnosed with a hereditary heart condition. The news, announced in October 2022, sent shockwaves through the club and the wider football community, instantly ending the promising career of a player known for his dynamism and potential.
The Zambian international, who had become a key figure for the Seagulls since his arrival from Red Bull Salzburg, was taken ill while on a flight to link up with his national team during an international break. Following his hospitalization and extensive cardiac tests carried out by Brighton’s medical staff and external specialists, the diagnosis confirmed a hereditary cardiac issue.
The club’s medical team determined that the condition was so severe that continuing to play competitive football would place Mwepu at an extremely high risk of suffering a fatal cardiac arrest. The difficult but necessary decision to immediately retire was made to ensure his long-term health and safety.
Brighton & Hove Albion chairman, Tony Bloom, expressed the collective devastation felt at the club, saying, “We are all absolutely devastated for Enock. He and his family have had a traumatic few weeks and while we are just thankful he has come through that period, he has seen such a promising career cut short at such a young age.”
Mwepu himself released an emotional statement, sharing the sadness of having to prematurely hang up his boots: “A small boy from a Zambian township called Chambishi has some news to share… Some dreams, however, come to an end, so it is with sadness that I announce the need to hang up my boots because of the medical advice I have received.”
Despite the heartbreaking end to his playing days, Mwepu immediately showed resilience and a desire to remain involved in the sport. Shortly after his retirement, Brighton announced that he would be appointed as a coach within the club’s academy system, allowing him to embark on the next chapter of his footballing journey.
