HUGE BOOST: Just In!!! Kentucky Wildcats Land New Coach, Fans And Mark Pope- In Frenzy

The Kentucky Wildcats men’s basketball coaching staff is undergoing significant changes this offseason, and head coach Mark Pope has added another key piece. Former NBA guard Mo Williams, who spent the last four seasons as head coach at Jackson State Tigers men’s basketball, will join Kentucky as an assistant coach for the 2026–27 season.

Jackson State confirmed Monday that Williams stepped down from his head coaching role to take the position at Kentucky. His arrival also coincides with the recent commitment of his son, Mason Williams, a four-star point guard who became Kentucky’s first pledge in the 2026 recruiting class.

In a statement, Jackson State athletic director Ashley Robinson thanked Williams for his contributions, praising his leadership and dedication to elevating the program while wishing him success in his new role.

Williams, 43, played two seasons at Alabama Crimson Tide men’s basketball before being selected in the 2003 NBA Draft. He went on to enjoy a 13-year professional career, earning an All-Star selection in 2009 and winning an NBA title with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2016 before retiring.

After his playing career, Williams transitioned into coaching, serving as an assistant at Cal State Northridge before becoming head coach at Alabama State in 2020. He later took over at Jackson State in 2022, where he posted a 57–75 overall record, including a strong 47–25 mark in conference play.

Williams previously faced Kentucky early in Pope’s tenure, when the Wildcats defeated Jackson State 108–59 in November 2024. Following that game, Pope praised Williams’ competitive approach and impact on the sport, while Williams commended Kentucky’s offensive system and ball movement.

Meanwhile, Kentucky’s staff continues to evolve. Jason Hart has departed to become associate head coach at SMU Mustangs men’s basketball under Andy Enfield, while Alvin Brooks III was not retained after his contract expired. Other assistants, including Mark Fox and Cody Fueger, also have contracts nearing expiration, leaving uncertainty around the full makeup of Pope’s staff.

Mikhail McLean remains the only assistant currently signed through the 2026–27 season. Additionally, Kentucky recently hired Keegan Brown as director of roster management, a role aimed at helping shape the team moving forward.

Pope, who is under contract through the 2029–30 season, is coming off a 22–14 campaign in 2025–26 that ended with a second-round NCAA Tournament loss to Iowa State Cyclones men’s basketball.
