After signing a 13-year, $330 million contract with Philadelphia, Harper experienced one of the most challenging periods of his career. In the early part of the 2019 season, he led the league with 58 strikeouts and managed only seven home runs in 43 games. Reflecting on that time, Harper admitted, “I know that baseball is beautiful, and when one night goes wrong, there’s always the opportunity to find yourself the next day. I’ll keep working to make things better from now on.”
Harper also recounted a particularly harrowing incident in 2021 when he was struck in the face by a 96.9 mph fastball during a game against the St. Louis Cardinals. Despite the frightening nature of the injury, Harper remained resilient, stating in a video message, “Everything feels good. Everything came back good, the CT scan, all those things, so my face is still there. We’re all good. See you soon.”
