The 2025 season is crucial for the Philadelphia Phillies, as their window to compete for championships is narrowing with veterans approaching free agency and key young players nearing new contracts. To capitalize on this window, the Phillies are eyeing a blockbuster trade with the Minnesota Twins for their standout closer, Jhoan Durán. This proposed deal would see Durán heading to Philadelphia in exchange for several top-30 prospects, a significant move that would alter the course for both teams as they embark on different paths.
Durán, entering his fourth MLB season in 2025, has posted a 2.70 ERA and four strikeouts through four games so far. Although he hasn’t earned an All-Star selection, his early career has been highly impressive. In his rookie season, Durán threw 67 and two-thirds innings with a 1.86 ERA, tallying eight saves and 89 strikeouts. While he didn’t garner any major awards, his impact was undeniable. Despite a slight regression in 2023 with a 2.45 ERA over 62 and one-third innings, Durán still posted 27 saves and 84 strikeouts. In 2024, he experienced another slight dip, finishing with a 3.64 ERA in 54 and one-third innings. This gradual decline may give the Twins pause, presenting an opportunity for the Phillies to strike with a trade offer.
Acquiring Durán, who still has two years of control after 2025, would be a major boost to the Phillies’ bullpen, helping to solidify an already strong unit. With the departures of Jeff Hoffman and Carlos Estevez, the Phillies were in need of another right-handed reliever, and while Jordan Romano was expected to fill that role, his early performance in Philadelphia has been underwhelming. Durán’s arrival would provide the Phillies with another reliable right-handed arm, potentially positioning him as the team’s closer in 2025. A bullpen featuring Durán, Jose Alvarado, and Matt Strahm would quickly become one of the most formidable in Major League Baseball.
