Hubert Davis is under intense scrutiny after the North Carolina Tar Heels men’s basketball suffered a shocking first-round loss to the VCU Rams men’s basketball in the NCAA Tournament.
North Carolina appeared in control for much of the game, building a commanding 19-point lead, but the No. 11-seeded Rams stormed back. VCU forced overtime and eventually secured an 82–78 victory, knocking down a clutch three-pointer with just 15 seconds left in the extra period.
Off the bench, Terrence Hill Jr. delivered a standout performance, pouring in a game-high 34 points while shooting efficiently from both the field and beyond the arc. For UNC, Henri Veesaar led the way with 26 points and 10 rebounds in the losing effort.
The comeback marked the biggest NCAA Tournament rally since 2018, when Nevada Wolf Pack men’s basketball stunned Cincinnati Bearcats men’s basketball in the second round. However, this defeat hit particularly hard for Davis, as criticism quickly followed.
Among the loudest critics was NFL Hall of Famer Shannon Sharpe, who didn’t hold back on social media. He described Davis’ performance as “one of the worst coaching jobs” he has seen in some time, questioning why adjustments weren’t made to slow down Hill Jr. during his dominant stretch.

This marks the second consecutive year the Tar Heels have been eliminated in the opening round, adding to growing concerns about the program’s postseason struggles under Davis. The situation was further complicated this year by the absence of star player Caleb Wilson, who missed the tournament due to season-ending thumb surgery.
Davis, a former UNC player, took over as head coach in the 2021–22 season and immediately led the team to the national championship game. However, even that run ended in disappointment, as the Kansas Jayhawks men’s basketball erased a 16-point deficit to win the title.
With back-to-back early exits and mounting criticism from media and analysts, serious questions are now emerging about the future direction of North Carolina basketball under Davis following this latest collapse.
