New Orleans Saints Land Quarterback Star Justin Fields in Blockbuster Trade with Steelers
The New Orleans Saints have acquired quarterback Justin Fields from the Pittsburgh Steelers in a stunning trade that reshapes the franchise’s future at the most important position.
The deal, finalized early Thursday morning, sends Fields to New Orleans in exchange for a 2025 second-round pick, a conditional 2026 third-round pick, and quarterback Jameis Winston.
“This is a move we’ve been building toward,” said Saints General Manager Mickey Loomis at a packed press conference. “Justin is a dynamic player with elite tools, and we believe this is the right situation for him to take the next step — and for our team to evolve.”
Fields, 26, was traded from Chicago to Pittsburgh just one year ago, but after the Steelers handed the reins to Russell Wilson, the former Ohio State star was left in limbo. Despite showing flashes of brilliance, Fields never fully settled into Pittsburgh’s offense, and the Saints seized the opportunity.
Now, Fields will compete with and likely overtake Derek Carr as the team’s QB1 heading into the 2025 season. Sources say the team views Fields as the future and intends to build the offense around his dual-threat capabilities.
A New Chapter for Fields, and the Saints’ Offense
The acquisition of Fields marks a significant philosophical shift for the Saints, who have struggled to find consistent quarterback play since Drew Brees retired after the 2020 season. While Carr had moments in 2024, inconsistency and a lack of offensive spark limited the team’s ceiling.
Enter Fields — a player known for his mobility, deep-ball ability, and leadership.
“He’s a playmaker,” said head coach Dennis Allen. “You don’t get many chances to land a player like this in his prime, with that kind of upside. We’re going to tailor the system to his strengths and let him be himself.”
Fields has thrown for over 8,000 yards and rushed for more than 2,000 in his career, often carrying underpowered offenses. In New Orleans, he’ll be surrounded by a more complete cast: Chris Olave, Rashid Shaheed, Alvin Kamara, and promising tight end Juwan Johnson give him the most talent he’s ever had at his disposal.
Offensive coordinator Ronald Curry is reportedly already sketching up RPO-heavy packages and bootlegs to take advantage of Fields’ legs and arm.
“We want to unleash him,” said Curry. “He’s not here to be a system guy. We’re going to build the system around him.”
The locker room has responded positively. Olave, who played with Fields at Ohio State, posted a reaction on Instagram that simply read: “Let’s gooooooo 🔥🔋 #reunion.”
What the Trade Means for the Saints’ Future
This blockbuster deal isn’t just about 2025 — it’s about reshaping the identity of Saints football for the next five years. While the team still carries veteran contracts and cap burdens, bringing in a young, controllable quarterback with franchise potential is a massive shift.
Fields is expected to receive an extension soon, as the Saints reportedly want to lock him in before prices escalate further across the league. With a capable supporting cast and one of the better defenses in the NFC, the Saints are quietly becoming one of the conference’s most intriguing sleeper contenders.
Still, challenges remain. The offensive line needs to stay healthy, and Fields must continue to improve his processing speed and short-game accuracy. But with improved coaching and personnel stability, the Saints believe he’s ready to take that leap.
“We’re not done building,” said Loomis. “But we now have a quarterback who can win games with his arm, his legs, and his heart. That’s what this city deserves.”
The Steelers, meanwhile, clear the way for Wilson and receive valuable draft capital while offloading any quarterback controversy. According to Pittsburgh GM Omar Khan, the team was “happy to help Fields find a place where he can thrive and get the opportunity he deserves.”
As the dust settles, fans across New Orleans are buzzing.
“It finally feels like the future is here,” said longtime season ticket holder Marcus Duvernay. “This team’s got swagger again. Who dat!”
