Mike Krzyzewski Sends Clear Message After Major Jon Scheyer News - Athlon Sports

After taking the reins from legendary coach Mike Krzyzewski, Jon Scheyer has taken the Duke Blue Devils back to the Final Four — a major milestone in his young coaching career. While Scheyer has reached the NCAA Tournament in all three of his seasons as Duke’s head coach, this year stands out as his most impressive yet.

The Blue Devils have compiled a stellar 35-3 record, the best during Scheyer’s tenure. Even more impressive, he guided Duke to an ACC championship without the help of All-American Cooper Flagg, showcasing his ability to adapt and lead.

As a result of the team’s outstanding performance, Scheyer was named the 2025 John McLendon National Coach of the Year — an honor awarded to the top head coach across all levels of college basketball, including Division I, II, III, NAIA, and JUCO.

Shortly after the news broke, former Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski shared a heartfelt message of support for his former player and assistant.

“Hey, Jon, congratulations on the McLendon award,” Krzyzewski said. “You are the national coach of the year. What a year you’ve had with your team. Really, you’re connected as connected can be. I love watching you guys develop, and I’m so proud of you. Congratulations.”

Scheyer, who played under Coach K from 2006 to 2010, helped Duke win a national title during his senior season. Now, with his first Final Four appearance as a coach, he joins a rare group who have led the same school to the national semifinals as both a player and head coach.

Next up for Scheyer and the Blue Devils: a showdown against the Houston Cougars in the national semifinal on Saturday at 8:49 p.m. ET in San Antonio, Texas, as they aim for their first title game since Coach K’s final season in 2022.
