The Buffalo Bills have been active in free agency but are still looking to add another wide receiver for the 2025 NFL season. However, it caught many in Bills Mafia off guard when Stefon Diggs’ name surfaced in the conversation this week.
To be clear, no major NFL insiders have directly linked Diggs to Buffalo. Instead, speculation has grown as fans analyze the situation and consider the possibility of the four-time Pro Bowler making a return to Orchard Park. Dan Mitchell of Roundtable Sports recently broke down the rumors and discussion surrounding the topic.
This has sparked debate over whether general manager Brandon Beane should explore a reunion with Diggs as the Bills continue their pursuit of their first Super Bowl title.
Bills, Stefon Diggs No Longer A Free-Agent Match
Diggs’ Success in Buffalo
The bitter conclusion to Diggs’ initial run with the Bills shouldn’t completely overshadow his achievements. Here’s a breakdown of the 31-year-old Maryland native’s stats from his four seasons in Buffalo:
- 2020: 127 receptions, 1,535 yards, 8 touchdowns
- 2021: 103 receptions, 1,225 yards, 10 touchdowns
- 2022: 108 receptions, 1,429 yards, 11 touchdowns
- 2023: 107 receptions, 1,183 yards, 8 touchdowns
Those are top-tier numbers across the board. Even in his final season, despite some visible signs of decline, he remained highly productive. Since he never relied solely on speed to create separation, his playing style allowed him to maintain effectiveness as he aged.
It’s also worth noting that Diggs didn’t arrive in Buffalo when Josh Allen was already an MVP-caliber quarterback. In 2020, Allen was still working to solidify his place as the franchise leader after two inconsistent seasons to start his career.
Diggs’ arrival was exactly what Allen needed—a legitimate No. 1 receiver. Their connection was seamless, particularly in the early years, as the quarterback found his go-to target and Diggs appeared to have moved past the issues that followed him in Minnesota.
For a time, it even seemed like the 2020 First-Team All-Pro would finish his career as a Bill.
Allen-Diggs Relationship Fades
By the end of the 2022 season, things started to shift for the Bills. Their offense struggled in a 27-10 home playoff loss to the Cincinnati Bengals, during which cameras captured Diggs expressing his frustrations to quarterback Josh Allen. While that moment didn’t immediately seal his fate, it ultimately marked the beginning of the end for his time in Buffalo.
Diggs returned for the 2023 season, but the chemistry between him and Allen wasn’t the same. Their interactions lacked the energy and mutual respect of previous years. Meanwhile, the Bills gradually adjusted their offensive approach, signaling that they were preparing for a future without him. His tenure with the team ended with a quiet performance—just three catches for 21 yards—in a 27-24 playoff loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.
Eventually, general manager Brandon Beane traded Diggs, along with a couple of late-round picks, to the Houston Texans in April in exchange for a 2025 second-round selection.
Bills No Longer Need Diggs
The current status of Allen and Diggs’ relationship is unclear, but a reunion on the field wouldn’t benefit either side.
Buffalo has already revamped its receiving corps, featuring Khalil Shakir, Keon Coleman, Joshua Palmer, and Curtis Samuel, along with tight ends Dalton Kincaid and Dawson Knox. The team has embraced a balanced “everyone contributes” mentality. Their primary need at the position is a deep-threat receiver who can stretch defenses— a role with limited snaps.
On top of that, Diggs is recovering from a torn ACL suffered in late October, adding to concerns about his physical decline as he moves past 30. That’s likely why he remains unsigned. To prove he’s still an impact player, he may need to accept a short-term, incentive-heavy contract. Ideally, he’ll join a team where he can secure a significant target share to boost his value before hitting free agency again next year.
Beyond the on-field fit, there’s also the question of locker room dynamics. Given how his departure unfolded, bringing him back could create unnecessary distractions—something the Bills can’t afford as they push for a championship.
While the idea of a Diggs return generated some speculation, it’s evident that both sides are better off moving forward.
