Nationals’ Latest Roster Cuts Signal Final Roster Decisions as Spring Training Nears End
As Spring Training winds down, the Washington Nationals have made a significant round of roster moves, cutting multiple players who were in contention for key roles. The team has optioned infielder Nasim Nuñez, catcher Drew Millas, and left-handed pitchers DJ Herz and Shinnosuke Ogasawara to Triple-A Rochester, finalizing their Opening Day plans.
Pitching Battle Comes to an End
Herz and Ogasawara had been competing for the final spot in the starting rotation but struggled to secure it. Herz, who made his Major League debut last season, showed a noticeable drop in velocity compared to 2024, while Ogasawara faced a steep adjustment to Major League competition after spending nine years in Japan’s NPB. With these two pitchers now in Triple-A, it strongly suggests that Mitchell Parker will claim the final spot in the rotation, though the team has yet to make an official announcement.
Nuñez’s Impressive Spring Not Enough to Secure Roster Spot
Nuñez, who was one of the Nationals’ standout performers this spring, showcased his offensive improvements with a .970 OPS and seven stolen bases. However, with the team prioritizing consistent playing time for him, the Nationals opted to send him to the minors so he can play every day rather than in a limited backup role at the Major League level.
