On the first day of the International Championship in Tianjin, all four competitors—Ronnie O’Sullivan, Luca Brecel, Judd Trump, and Mark Allen—won, intensifying the competition for the top spot in the world.

The current champion and seven-time world champion Ronnie O’Sullivan defeated Ken Doherty, the 1997 Crucible champion, 6-1 to guarantee his spot in the final 64.

This season, the Rocket has already won a trophy in China after defeating Brecel 11-9 in the exciting Shanghai Masters final. But since that was an invitational tournament and he lost in the quarterfinals of the Wuhan Open and the English Open, respectively, and the last 16, his position atop the rankings is in jeopardy.

This evening, O’Sullivan was playing at an incredible level. He won with breaks of 112, 81, 66, 78, and 68. The 39-time winner of the ranking event will next face Mark Joyce in a second round match.

After astonishingly winning three straight ranking events—the English Open, Wuhan Open, and Northern Ireland Open—Trump has pushed his way into the running for the top spot. The Ace in the Pack easily defeated Chinese 12-year-old prospect Wang Xinzhong 6-0 to extend his winning run to 21 games.

With his most recent victory in Belfast, he became one of only three players to win three straight ranking events, along with Ray Reardon, Steve Davis, Stephen Hendry, and Ding Junhui. If Trump wins this week, he will only be the second person (after Hendry) to win four straight.

He is the current champion and has a strong past in this competition, having won the previous staging in 2019.Trump won this evening with the help of runs of 116, 109, 67, and 89. He is aware that he needs to advance to the quarterfinals in order to have a chance to become the world’s number one player. In the final 64, he will take on Michael White. Trump later acknowledged that he is on the verge of reaching his peak physical state.

“The entire season has been precarious.” Mark Allen and Luca Brecel have already had opportunities. Ronnie has been absent from a few tournaments, but this one is huge. According to Trump, who has won 26 ranking events, the International Championship is now the largest event in China.

“I believe my current level of play is very close to what it was during my six-event winning season in 2019–20.” It is never easy to assess one’s level of play, but it is truly remarkable for me to win three straight events—something that only four other people have accomplished.

Player of the Year Allen from the previous campaign maintained his hopes by defeating.

After taking first place in the UK Championship, World Grand Prix, and Northern Ireland Open last season, the Pistol is currently ranked fourth in the world. To surpass O’Sullivan, he must win this week’s competition. After topping the score this morning with 137, the Antrim cueman will now take on Thepchaiya Un-Nooh, who defeated Matthew Selt 6-5.

Allen stated: “Judd has established himself as a serious contender after winning the previous three ranking events. At the onset of the season, he was unknown to anyone. It displays the possible outcomes of the game. You guys should enjoy the story, but right now we just need to focus on going out there and winning games. If I triumph in games and competitions, the ranking will be taken care of.

World Champion Brecel defeated Daniel Womersley 6-2 to secure his spot in the following round.

The Belgian is now ranked second and needs to make it to at least the final 16 in order to take the top spot. He now plays Mark Davis after making breaks of 79, 58, and 76 in this afternoon’s match.

Barry Hawkins, who won the European Masters this season, outplayed Tian Pengfei 6-0 with an incredible display. With contributions of 123, 114, 50, 139, and 67, The Hawk excelled in this masterclass of break building.

Stuart Bingham defeated Matthew Stevens 6-5, while Ding Junhui, the 14-time winner of ranking events in China, easily defeated Ian Burns 6-1.
