NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero reported on Thursday that the NFL penalised Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott $25,000 for remarks he made after the team’s wild-card loss to the 49ers last Sunday.
Prescott applauded supporters for expressing their dissatisfaction with the game’s calling by hurling trash in the direction of officials as they exited the field following Dallas’ season-ending 23-17 loss to the Niners.
In the final seven seconds of the game, after a 17-yard run by Prescott, umpire Ramon George unintentionally bumped Prescott while he was attempting to spot the ball. Dallas was unable to snap the ball because the play clock had run out.
Prescott thought the garbage-throwing spectacle was “sad” at first because he thought it was just aimed at the players who weren’t performing well enough. Then, after hearing from a member of the media that the referees were the target of the hate, he changed his position and said, “Well done, then. Bravo to them.”
On Tuesday, Prescott apologised on Twitter.
“I deeply regret the comments I made regarding the officials after the game on Sunday,” Prescott wrote on Twitter. “I was caught up in the emotion of a disappointing loss and my words were uncalled for and unfair.”

Prescott is still a good quarterback and his career is unlikely to end anytime soon, despite his playoff struggles, but it’s unclear if he has reached a plateau.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones gushes about Dak being “Super,” adding, “I start right there with a big circle and a big plus (for the Cowboys’) future: Dak Prescott.” However, Jones isn’t ready to heap praise on his coaching staff.
