Dak Prescott won the Walter Payton Man of the Year award for 2022 as a result of his charitable foundation’s efforts to promote suicide prevention in memory of his brother and cancer research in honour of his mother.

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Prescott took home the prize at the NFL Honours on Thursday night.

NFL players who demonstrate “his excellence on and off the field” are eligible to win the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award.

Prescott started off by expressing gratitude to everyone in his immediate vicinity, including his father, siblings, the Cowboys organisation, and the people working on his foundation, the Faith Fight Finish Foundation.

However, he stated that his late mother Peggy, who passed away in 2013 from colon cancer, was the most significant person to him.

“I want to acknowledge the person who has had the biggest influence on my life, my mother, Peggy,” he stated. “My moral compass has always been my mother. And I want to share her bravery and resilience with the world through my own philanthropic giving.”

“She was one of a kind,” he continued. “My mother inspired me and motivated me to be great despite the circumstances.”

Prescott went on to say that following his brother Jace’s suicide in 2020, he increased the scope of his foundation’s activity.

However, as the piece also pays tribute to my brother Jase, who, as you can see, died by suicide,

Any NFL team may submit a player nomination for the honour. In the end, players who receive the honour get $250,000 to contribute to any charity of their choosing. The NFL Foundation and Nationwide will contribute up to $40,000 to the charitable causes of the remaining nominees.

Saquon Barkley of the New York Giants and Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs were among the other nominees for the 2022 honour.

The Los Angeles Rams’ Andrew Whitworth was the winner of this award last year. Whitworth, 41, received the award in recognition of his numerous altruistic activities off the pitch.
