The fifth-ranked player in the world, Pegula, participated in three tournaments in January prior to pulling out of this month’s WTA 1000 events in Doha and Dubai. A neck injury was mentioned as the cause of Pegula’s announcement of her absence from Doha and Dubai.

However, some tennis fans didn’t buy it, wondering if Pegula’s absence from the Middle East swing could have been due to pregnancy.

“I’m not expecting. “Lol,” Pegula wrote as the caption for an Instagram Story she shared from the workout court.

Following her withdrawals from Doha and Dubai, Pegula announced that she had committed to compete in the San Diego Open, a WTA 500 event that begins on February 26.

Pegula, who turns 30 on Saturday, is set for her second San Diego appearance. In her first and lone San Diego appearance that came in 2022, Pegula made the semifinal before losing to Iga Swiatek.

Pegula is the only player ranked in the top 10 to be competing in the San Diego event this year, and she is the top seed. The world No. 10 and 2023 French Open champion, Karolina Muchova, was also supposed to play in San Diego, but she has to withdraw from the competition after having wrist surgery this week.

Pegula is coming off an injury layoff and a heartbreaking second-round loss to Clara Burel at the Australian Open, but she will undoubtedly be one of the top favourites to win in San Diego.

Pegula’s season might be boosted by performing well in San Diego and possibly taking home the trophy, just in time for the Sunshine Double in Indian Wells and Miami.
