“Joe from Vegas,” who wanted to know how Cam Heyward felt about becoming the fourth Pittsburgh Steelers player to ever receive the award, opened the joyous press conference following his announcement as the 2023 Walter Payton Man of the Year.
It’s astounding. Heyward, a veteran captain of the Steelers, remarked, “You look at guys like Joe Greene, Lynn Swan, Jerome Bettis, and Franco – I am just so honoured to be among that group.” “Those guys did so much for the community and upheld the standard that I almost don’t feel worthy of it.” It’s simply incredible to be involved in it.
Heyward had no idea that “Joe from Veags” was actually Joe Greene, the 1979 Man of the Year winner and legend of the Steelers. He answered the phone in time to surprise Heyward and congratulate him on being a member of an elite and illustrious club of Steelers legends.
I’ve always liked your game, but more than anything, I’ve always loved the man you were and are, and you know how much I appreciate you,” Heyward added
Heyward doesn’t take his newfound membership in the Walter Payton Men of the Year from Pittsburgh lightly; he feels the weight of history bearing down on him. He wants to live up to Greene’s legacy for as long as he dons black and gold because he sees Greene as an inspirational character in the franchise’s history.
Well, I am aware that Joe dislikes performing some of these tasks. I’m really amazed when he does things like this,” Heyward remarked. I adore that man, even though I am aware of how amazing he is and that he prefers not to draw attention to himself. That is the largest shadow you will ever have, and every defensive lineman for the Pittsburgh Steelers will always be in that shade.
