Before the 2024 season, the Green Bay Packers part ways with defensive…
The Green Bay Packers had a lot of unexpected changes coming into the 2024 campaign. The loss of Joe Barry, the team’s defensive coordinator, is one major development.
The enduring Packers player won’t be on the coaching staff in 2024, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Media.
The Packers’ head coach, Matt LaFleur, made a choice that might not surprise many. The Packers’ defensive play during the previous season had been anything but stellar, which had many anticipating a possible change despite the major consequences.
The Packers’ defence found it difficult to have an effect, especially in Week 16, when they let up the Carolina Panthers for 30 points and 394 yards in total.
Considering that the Panthers had a dismal season overall and only reached the 30-point plateau in this game, as well as finishing their final two games without a point, this was an unsightly low.
Resurgent in the postseason, the Packers defence failed to keep Barry in his position.
Earlier this week, when asked about Barry’s future, LaFleur was ambiguous, opening the possibility of future adjustments.
LaFleur declared, “I’m just going to go through the process at my own pace.”
2021 saw Barry’s first hire by the Packers. The defence has finished ninth, seventeenth, and seventeenth in yards and thirteenth, seventeenth, and tenth in points during his three seasons in charge.
Despite being decent, these figures might not meet the expectations the Packers have for themselves.
Barry had previously served as a defensive coordinator. He played the same position before to joining the Packers, first with the Detroit Lions in 2007–2008 and the Washington Football Team in 2015–2016.
The Packers’ defense’s future is in doubt in light of Barry’s exit. The Packers’ new defensive coordinator will need to provide a significant upgrade on Barry’s work if they are to win a title in 2024.

Fans of the Packers should be excited about what lies ahead for their team. The quarterback, Jordan Love, is the first step towards their bright future.
The Green Bay Packers’ game against the San Francisco 49ers on Saturday night didn’t go as planned. It seemed for three-quarters of the game that the Packers would win the NFC Championship. However, the Packers’ miraculous campaign came to an end. The 49ers defeated the Packers 24–21, and the Packers lost. Despite the disappointing conclusion, supporters of the Packers should be optimistic about what lies ahead for their club. With Jordan Love as their starting quarterback, their future is bright.
Jordan Love is One of Several Components for an Exciting Future for the Green Bay Packers
It seems like general manager Brian Gutekunst will come out on top despite all the backlash he received for choosing Jordan Love in the 2020 NFL Draft. Love’s performance calmed the sceptics during his rookie campaign as the starting quarterback for the Packers. In fact, so much so that many are suggesting that Love might be the top quarterback in the NFC going into 2024.
In 2023, love exceeded all of his expectations. 32 touchdown passes, more than 4,100 passing yards, and just 11 interceptions by the end of the regular season. Love stepped up and guided the Packers to a postseason berth when things appeared to be at their lowest point. Love performed admirably in the Packers’ first-round playoff triumph against the Dallas Cowboys, despite his difficulties against the 49ers. With 272 passing yards, two touchdown passes, and no interceptions, he completed 16 of 21 passes. Even in their playoff defeat, Love showed that the big stage wasn’t too big for him during the Packers’ playoff victory.
Although Jordan Love is a bright spot for Packers fans, they should also be pleased about what he has in store for 2024 and beyond. It seems like the offence for the Green Bay Packers has a few more bright spots that should shine.
An Exceptional Team of Pass-Takers
Many, ourselves included, thought Gutekunst had erred in not signing a seasoned wide receiver before 2023. It was believed that Love would gain from having a dependable, experienced pass catcher to rely on. However, Gutekunst’s wager on his inexperienced group of pass catchers came off handsomely.
There wasn’t a standout wide receiver for Love. He had a 1A, 1B, and 1C instead. Romeo Doubs (59 receptions, 674 yards, eight touchdown receptions), Dontayvion Wicks (39 receptions, 581 yards, four touchdown receptions), and Jayden Reed (64 receptions, 793 yards, eight touchdown receptions) combined to become a three-headed monster. Looking like a rising star, youngster Reed is making big plays out of the slot and on Jets sweeps. Love grew to rely on Doubs, the “veteran” member of the group, to provide support and drama when needed. Another newbie, Wick, caught everyone off guard. The 2023 fifth-round selection far exceeded his preseason projections.
Head coach Matt LaFleur also got contributions out of lesser-known pass catchers. Bo Melton and Malik Heath combined for 31 receptions for 343 yards with two touchdown catches. The surprise contributions were just icing on the cake.
Christian Watson missed a significant amount of time due to injury, yet the Packers’ effective passing attack managed to accomplish all of this without his assistance. With Watson scheduled to return full-time in 2024, expectations will be considerably higher. However, Watson will have to demonstrate his ability to maintain his health, as he hasn’t done in his first two NFL seasons.
Spot for Tight End in Good Hands
The Packers have been searching for a tight end who could improve their passing game for a very long time. Robert Tonyan, a former Packer, had looked like that kind of player at one point, but injuries ended his Packers career. But it looks like LaFleur has found two tight ends who will contribute going forward, rather than just one.
Luke Musgrave was projected to be the kind of tight end who would help the Packers extend their middle of the field when he was taken in the second round. This previous season, he showed glimpses of such skill with 34 receptions for 352 yards and one touchdown catch. However, he also missed time due to injuries this season. He did return for the postseason, and training camp should find him in perfect health. Although Musgrave’s blocking ability isn’t well-known, he has enormous potential as a pass receiver.
Tucker Kraft was the rookie tight end who caught our eye. Chosen one round ahead of Musgrave, Kraft replaced the latter after the latter suffered an injury. The South Dakota State graduate proved to be a useful blocking asset for the offensive line. However, Kraft’s skill as a pass catcher caught a lot of people off guard. He had two touchdown receptions and 31 catches for 355 yards at the end of the season. Fans of the Packers and LaFleur should be excited about that talent. It should offer Love a few big-body targets in the passing game and allow LaFleur to employ a lot of two tight-end sets the following season.
Outstanding Performance in the Playoffs by the Offensive Line
We said last week that the offensive line for the Green Bay Packers was coming together at the ideal time. Against the 49ers on Saturday, that camaraderie and excellent performance persisted. Nothing was sackable because to the offensive line. They didn’t allow a single sack in their two postseason games against the NFL’s top two pass-rushing teams. Additionally, in every postseason game, running back Aaron Jones was able to gain over 100 yards because to their run blocking.
The nucleus of the Packers is youthful, much like the rest of the roster. The most seasoned player is Elgton Jenkins, who will only be starting his sixth season in 2024. Only Jon Runyan Jr., the starting five, will be available for free this offseason. Even if the Packers decide to let him depart, they have Sean Rhyan, a former third-round pick who saw some action this season, as a potential replacement.
Many questioned if Rasheed Walker would be the team’s long-term left tackle. This season, he went through some difficult times, but he finished well. It seems likely that the Packers will part ways with veteran outstanding left tackle David Bakhtiari this off-season because of his considerable promise. It is important to strengthen the right tackle now and in the future. Zach Tom appears to have the makings of a right-side All-Pro tackle in the future.
The swing tackle and potentially centre positions seem to be the only positions the Packers will need to address. Walker and Tom defeated Yosh Nijman in the preseason, and Nijman has remained at swing tackle this year. It seems unlikely that he will return and he will be a free agent. Finding a capable backup is imperative for the Packers, particularly for Walker. Josh Myers, the starting centre, performed better this season, but his ability to hold down the position is still in doubt. Anticipate Gutekunst to select an offensive lineman in this year’s draft class who can support the guard positions in addition to competing with Myers.
