Player for Charlotte FC Anton Walkes Passes Away at Age 25 in a Miami Boat Accident

Soccer player Anton Walkes of Charlotte FC passed away at the age of 25 following a boat accident in Miami.

Walkes was discovered unresponsive on Wednesday outside Miami Marine Stadium; he was given CPR, but he died early on Thursday morning.

In a statement, Charlotte’s sporting director Zoran Krneta stated, “We are heartbroken from the loss of Anton Walkes, a truly incredible father, loving person, and outstanding human being.”

“Our entire community is in mourning over this tragedy, and Anton embodied what it meant to be a part of Charlotte Football Club.”

“We will never forget the impression he had on Charlotte, both in the locker room and elsewhere. We will provide his wonderful family with all of our support at this difficult moment.”

“There are no words to describe the sorrow of everyone in Major League Soccer today after learning of the tragic passing of Anton Walkes of Charlotte FC,” a statement from the league said.

“Both his teammates and supporters adored Anton, who was a gifted and devoted athlete. Our sincere sympathies go out to his partner, his family, his friends, and the whole Charlotte FC community.

“MLS is coordinating with Charlotte FC to provide players and family members with the resources and support they may need during this tragic time.”

Walkes, who was born in London, played 66 appearances for Portsmouth after beginning his career at Tottenham Hotspur.

When Tottenham loaned him to Atlanta United in 2017, he experienced American football for the first time.

After spending two more seasons playing in Georgia, Walkes returned to Atlanta in 2020. In the MLS Expansion Draft in 2021, Charlotte chose him.

Tottenham released the following statement on Thursday: “We are very sorry to learn of the loss of former player Anton Walkes. Everyone at the Club is thinking about his family and friends at this extremely difficult time.
