As the seventh and last choice in the 2022 NFL draft, Purdy demonstrated his proficiency as a quarterback in 2023, making him one of the league’s most effective players. With 4,280 yards and 31 throwing touchdowns, he led the league in QBR passer rating and vaulted himself into MVP contention.
Even the finest, however, need a strong backup. There are two additional quarterbacks on San Francisco’s roster that may fit into Kyle Shanahan’s scheme.

Who is the backup quarterback for the 49ers?
Purdy, 24, has established himself as San Francisco’s starting quarterback. But the Niners have a previous top-three selection as his backup in case he isn’t available.
Purdy’s primary understudy is named Sam Darnold. In the last four seasons, the 26-year-old has played for the Jets, Panthers, and 49ers. He made only one start during his first year in San Francisco: the regular-season finale, a 21-20 defeat in which he completed 16 of 26 passes for 189 yards, one touchdown, and no interceptions.

Darnold, the third overall pick overall in the 2018 NFL Draft out of USC, started quarterback for the Jets for three seasons. next his move in 2021, he spent the next two seasons playing with the Panthers.
As the backup quarterback, Brandon Allen completes the 49ers’ quarterback room.
Former Arkansas standout Allen joined the Jaguars in 2016 as a backup quarterback. Prior to moving to San Francisco in 2023, he had played for the Bengals, Broncos, and Rams.
Most famously, in 2020, he replaced star Joe Burrow as the Bengals’ starting quarterback when Burrow tore his ACL. He completed 925 yards of passing with five touchdowns and four interceptions in five starts.
Leeds United’s 49ers transfer spending capacity is ambitious despite their FFP issue.
Leeds United’s failure to make a major acquisition during the January transfer window is due to financial regulations more than a lack of desire or resources. Daniel Farke discussed the difficulties in recruiting the top players in this mid-season market on Friday, making his first allusion to the EFL’s regulatory restrictions.

I always take care to avoid saying things like, “We need a player on this and that position,” too much. Prior to this window, the group was not very large, and we had traded Luke Ayling and Djed Spence for two defensive-minded players.
“We’ll make a decision on Charlie Cresswell’s subject within the next two weeks. Overall, therefore, it is clearly the case—and something we are completely aware of—that we are not particularly strong numerically in our defensive positions. We shall, however, only discuss business matters after the completion of our tasks.
