Are Red Sox Contract Extensions on the Horizon? Sam Kennedy Outlines Priorities
While much of the Red Sox’s contract extension buzz has centered around Garrett Crochet, Boston could finalize other deals before Opening Day as well.
In 2024, Brayan Bello secured his extension just weeks before the season began, and not long after, Ceddanne Rafaela followed suit. Under chief baseball officer Craig Breslow, the Red Sox front office has made a habit of locking in young talent early—a trend that could continue this year.
Kennedy Emphasizes Focus on Retaining Core Players
“Without getting into specifics, extending our own players is definitely a priority if at all possible,” Red Sox president Sam Kennedy said on the Fenway Rundown podcast with MassLive’s Chris Cotillo and Sean McAdam.
He highlighted the team’s philosophy of building a balanced roster.
“The hallmark of a great Red Sox team, in our experience, includes homegrown players, international signees, and key free agents from other organizations. But having that core is absolutely essential. We’d love to finalize extensions with some of our younger players, though we don’t want to put undue pressure on anyone with Opening Day approaching. Of course, deals can still get done during the season.”
Who Could Be Next for an Extension?
While Kennedy did not mention specific names, potential extension candidates could include Jarren Duran, Tristan Casas, or Tanner Houck. However, as he noted, there’s still plenty of time to work out future deals.
Meanwhile, the Red Sox remain focused on securing an extension for Crochet. The 25-year-old, who has two years left on his current contract, has expressed interest in staying in Boston long-term.
With Opening Day just around the corner, it remains to be seen whether any deals will be finalized before the season kicks off on Thursday.
