Reversing his earlier remarks, Ronnie O’Sullivan said that he had “no interest in numbers” and that the opportunity to win eight championships at each Triple Crown tournament was a significant incentive.
Following his triumph in York in December, O’Sullivan’s victory in the Masters on Sunday marked his seventh appearance at the tournament and his total at the UK Championship.
After winning the first two Triple Crown events of the year, the 48-year-old will have an opportunity to compete in the World Championship in the spring, completing a single-season sweep of the sport’s most renowned competitions.
O’Sullivan, who has won seven global championships so far, said at the beginning of the Masters that his motivation came from the possibility of winning eight of each event.
“Having seven, seven, seven was fantastic, and now I have seven, seven, eight. So, it would be good to try for the three eights—eight, eight, and eight—O’Sullivan told Eurosport last week. “I guess trying to win another Masters or perhaps a Worlds is that kind of motivating thing to do.”
However, after defeating Ali Carter in the Alexandra Palace final on Sunday, O’Sullivan said he didn’t care and that he regretted expressing that wish.
“I regret bringing up that dumb eight, eight, eight,” O’Sullivan said after a 10-7 victory. Even if I have no interest in it, there are moments when you feel compelled to speak out. In all honesty, I’m not interested in figures.

O’Sullivan, who has already won seven worldwide titles, said at the start of the Masters that the prospect of taking home eight victories in each tournament served as his inspiration.
“It was great to have seven, seven, seven, and now I have seven, seven, eight. O’Sullivan told Eurosport this week that it would be wise to go for the three eights: eight, eight, and eight. “I guess trying to win another Masters or perhaps a Worlds is that kind of motivating thing to do.”

It has been my whole life, so I need to strike the perfect balance between feeling like I need to practise and put in a tonne of effort to win tournaments, and making sure I am ready to play. That no longer burns me out.
All that matters is getting out and playing enough so that, should I end up in a tournament, everything will work out well. If not, I’ll do my best to put on a fantastic performance.
