FRISCO – With a perfect 8-0 record this season, the NFC East champion Dallas Cowboys host the No. 7-seeded Green Bay Packers for a Wild Card game at AT&T Stadium, and they do it with a very clean sheet.
The two quarterbacks leading the league in passing touchdowns, Dak Prescott (36) and Jordan Love (32) are the main attractions of this Sunday afternoon matchup. The passing touchdown leaders are playing each other in the first round of the playoffs for the first time ever.
In route to yet another 12-5 record, Prescott has thrown for 4,516 yards, 36 touchdowns, and just nine interceptions in what has been an MVP-caliber season.
In addition, he created NFL history by becoming the first quarterback in history to complete more than 80% of his throws in four games in 2023.
Dallas finished 2023 with 299 points overall, setting a team record for the most points scored at home in a season.
As Jordan Love enters his first postseason as a starter, the Cowboys defense aims to challenge him. Love is coming off an amazing 316-yard, two-touchdown performance in which he completed 84.4 percent of his throws, which helped the team win three straight games and earn a playoff berth.
Dallas also has the difficult challenge of slowing down Aaron Jones, the running back who has been explosive recently. Jones ran for more than 100 yards in three consecutive games to close out the regular season.
In Dallas’ triumph in the regular season finale, Dan Quinn’s team clicked, giving up just 180 total yards to the Washington Commanders. Micah Parsons recorded his 14th career sack, while DaRon Bland secured his ninth interception.
Keep an eye out on Stephon Gilmore, a cornerback who usually heats up during the postseason. Gilmore has 11 pass breakups and two interceptions in his seven postseason games. Although Gilmore is one of the several expected to play, he is on the Dallas injured list.
After 13 seasons as a coach, Mike McCarthy will take on his old team, the Packers. However, the only Green Bay players dressed on Sunday who were part of McCarthy’s team are Aaron Jones, Kenny Clark, and Jaire Alexander.
It has been over thirty years since Dallas has advanced to the Conference Championship. The Cowboys will play at home again in the divisional round the following Saturday if they defeat the Packers.
FUN FACT: CeeDee Lamb led all wide receivers in targets (181), catches (135), yards after catch (680), scrimmage yards (1,862), overall touchdowns (14), receptions of 20 yards or more (29) and ranking second in receiving yards (1,749) at the end of the 2023 regular season.
Cowboys safety Jayron Kearse stated, “I’m pretty sure there’s going to be a lot of emotions with Coach McCarthy and rightfully so.” He has experienced success and has even won a Super Bowl.
