Nick Kyrgios reveals that being labeled “the bad boy of tennis” and receiving negative comments directed at him and his family members caused him to doubt himself and wonder if he was truly a bad person.

Kyrgios, 28, was dubbed the “bad boy of tennis” early in his career. Kyrgios battled a major depressive episode in 2019, and he even considered suicide at the time. Kyrgios admitted on Jay Shetty’s podcast that he was unhappy with the label he was given because he believes he is a very caring, nice, and kind person.

Dealing with constant criticism and scrutiny became too much for Kyrgios at one point.

Kyrgios discusses how negative comments about him affected him.
“Yeah, in 2019, I’ve opened up about some of my darkest times.”

And I just did. All these negative comments were so easily accessible, you know, you go on your phone now, open up social media, Instagram, Twitter, all of this. And I just say millions of messages that were negative, negative about my family, like just things that I don’t think I ever really listened to, but they just went into the back of my mind and are subconsciously there.

And then things start happening, and you think, maybe they’re right. You begin to doubt yourself. And I think that’s where I went wrong, thinking, “Oh, maybe they’re right.” And then I started feeling really bad about myself, and I began.

It was impossible for me to deal with all of these bad habits. I was 19 years old when this all started, and I wasn’t prepared for such a difficult time. As if I was just having fun. I had normal friends, and then I went from being in school to being on the global stage in the spotlight, which was simply too much for me to handle.

“I never dealt with it in a healthy way,” Kyrgios said on Jay Shetty’s show On Purpose. Kyrgios is now in a much better place, and people are approaching him to talk about their mental health issues. Kyrgios has stated several times in recent years that he is willing to talk to anyone who needs someone to talk to.
